Samsung chaebol
Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (Korean: RR: Samseong Jeonja; lit. "tristar electronics") is a multinational electronics corporation located in Suwon's Yeongtong District.
It is the crown jewel of the Samsung chaebol, generating 70% of the company's sales in 2012. Because of its circular ownership, Samsung Electronics has played a vital role in the group's corporate governance.
Samsung Electronics employs over 290,000 people and has assembly plants and sales networks in 74 countries.
Foreign investors own the majority of the company. Samsung Electronics is the world's second-largest technology company by revenue, with a market value of US$520.65 billion, making it the world's 12th-largest corporation.
Samsung is a major manufacturer of electronic components for Apple, Sony, HTC, and Nokia, including lithium-ion batteries, semiconductors, image sensors, camera modules, and screens.
Starting with the first Samsung Solstice and subsequently with the prominence of the Samsung Galaxy brand of devices, it is the world's largest manufacturer of mobile phones and smartphones.
The company is also a big seller of tablets, particularly its Android-powered Samsung Galaxy Tab line, and is credited with pioneering the phablet market with its Samsung Galaxy Note line of smartphones.
It has also created smartphones with 5G capabilities, like as the Galaxy S22, and foldable phones, such as the Galaxy Z Fold 3.
Samsung has been the world's largest television manufacturer since 2006 and the world's largest mobile phone manufacturer since 2011, when it surpassed Apple, and will remain so until 2021.
It is also the world's largest memory chip manufacturer and was the world's largest semiconductor company from 2017 to 2018, briefly dethroning Intel, the long-time leader.
Kwon Oh-Hyun was named CEO of the company in 2012. He announced his resignation in March 2018 in October 2017, citing a "exceptional crisis."
From March 2018 to December 2021, the company had three CEOs (Ki Nam Kim, Hyun Suk Kim, and Dong-Jin Koh), who were replaced by Kyung Kye-Hyun and Han Jong-hee when the business units were reformed.

Samsung Electric Industries was founded on January 19, 1969, in Suwon, South Korea, as an industrial division of the Samsung Group.
Samsung Group was known to the South Korean public at the time as a fertilizer and sweetener trade company.
Despite a lack of technology and resources that put it behind even domestic competitors, Samsung Group improved its position in the manufacturing industry by collaborating with Japanese companies, a decision that sparked widespread anti-Japanese sentiment and massive backlash from competitors fearful of outright Japanese subordination of the industry.
Only after the government and Samsung proclaimed that the company would solely focus on exports was the plan able to take off. Sanyo's founder, Toshio Iue, served as a counselor to Samsung's founder, Lee Byung-Chul, who was a beginner in the electronics sector.
In December of the same year, Samsung Electric formed a joint venture with Sanyo and Sumitomo Corporation called Samsung-Sanyo Electric. This is the direct forerunner of Samsung Electronics as we know it today.
Televisions, calculators, freezers, air conditioners, and washing machines were among the first electronic and electrical items produced by the joint venture. Samsung formed the Samsung-NEC joint venture with Japan's NEC Corporation and Sumitomo Corporation in 1970 to produce home appliances and audiovisual products.
Samsung-NEC later evolved into Samsung SDI, the company's display and battery division. Samsung-Sanyo Parts, the forerunner of Samsung Electro-Mechanics, was founded in 1973 by Samsung and Sanyo. Samsung Electric had produced more than 10 million black-and-white televisions by 1981.
